Hectic schedules. Barrage of emails. Endless mobile notifications. The daily grind we’re all too familiar with. Somewhere along the way, we forgot to take the time to smell the roses.
If you’re ready to slow things down this new year, then this a great place to start! Here are 8 easy ways to start living on the lighter side of life – simpler, healthier and happier.
1) Do a digital detox
Our modern lives are so intertwined with technology, which has become a cause of stress and anxiety. It’s good to disconnect every now and then to simplify our life and reconnect with people and the world.
2) Have a three item-to do list
We’re all too familiar with the overwhelming feeling of endless tasks piling up. If you don’t know where to start, then set three tasks to accomplish at the start of the day. This will help you to focus and approach your tasks in a manageable way. At the end of the day, when you check off the three items on your list, you will feel accomplished and motivated!
3) Say no
“Say no to the good so you can say yes to the best.”
Every task demands time and energy so channel your effort to the things that matter to you most. If you find yourself attending social engagements out of peer pressure, saying no would free you up for things that you love.
4) Have breakfast
It’s important to have breakfast within two hours of waking, even if you’re in a rush. Grab something light to start off the day and it will prevent overeating later in the day. When you’re asleep, your body is fasting and in a state of stress, so it’s crucial to break the nightly fast with the right food your body needs.
5) Get moving every hour
It’s possible to keep moving even if you have a desk-bound job! Get up and move for 5 minutes at least for every hour of sitting. Grab a coffee or walk over to your colleague’s desk. This reduces prolonged sedentary behaviour and helps you easily reach the guidelines of doing low-moderate exercise of 150 minutes per week.
6) Get enough sleep
Due to our hectic lifestyle, we tend to neglect the importance of sleep. Prolonged sleep deprivation puts the body in an inflamed state and leads to many health issues such as obesity, a weakened immune system and even diabetes. So get your 7-9 hours of sleep each night because sleep debts cannot be made up by naps or by sleeping in.
7) Count your blessings
Take stock of what you have and be thankful. While we all have aspirations, it’s just as important to be grounded and grateful for the things and people you have around you! A contented you is a happier you.
8) Give back
Nothing beats that warm, fuzzy feeling you get inside when doing something good for others. This year, find a way to give back to a cause you believe in. Big or small, every gesture counts. You’ll realise you’re a step closer to a happier you!
